Biography of Chandragupta Maurya
I. Early Years
A. Chandragupta begins building his empire in the 320s BC when he see weakness in northern Indian kingdoms.
B. He uses very much money and soldiers in the course of fighting wars to overthrow the northern kingdoms.
C. Chandragupta takes over all of northern India.
D. He uses force such as his amry, spies, and torture to keep his enemies from harming the empire.
II. Significant Events
A. Chandragupta unfies northern India.
B. He forms a strong central government, writes laws, gives farmers water, and builds a road to connect his empire.
C. He gives up his power at the end of his reign and becomes an ascetic at the end of his life while his empire expands.
III. Personal Attributes
A. Brave- Chandragupta was brave to risk so much of his money and soldiers to conquer northern India.
B. Wise- He was a wise leader because of some of his methods of keeping his empire together. He took no nonsense and eliminated threats, and ceated laws and kept his farmers happy.
IV. Contributions to History
A. Chandragupta became the first person to unite India.
B. He laid a foundation for Ashoka, who would later expand the empire and spread buddhism.
V. My Impressions
Chandragupta was a great ruler who was the first to unite India, and was relentless with his battles. He may have been harsh, but his methods were practical and kept his empire together.
